Who Is to Blame for Job Dissatisfaction?

By Laurie Sheppard Many of the stereotypes of companies are true. Companies often hire inexperienced workers for low pay, dont train them and then wonder why they get poor performance. Companies dont sufficiently include their employees in the creative idea process or give attention to individual input. They continue to enforce higher production requirements with tighter deadlines in effect, expecting a worker bee style from its employees to keep up with competitive needs. Staff has little promise of promotion in this time of cutbacks, and consequently no real cause for ownership, since they are simply expected to get the job done. Yet companies feel cheated if they dont get the quality work they expect from their workers. They complain that childcare options, flex hours, appreciation luncheons, sick leave and annual cost of living increases are frequently disregarded. Employees feel under appreciated and un-challenged and that constant complaint prevents stepping up their performance. They justify doing personal projects on company time since the hours at their jobs are often extended - never mind that its often due to their undisciplined and unfocused work habits. Employees feel the inequity of being asked to assume leadership roles, if it means increased workloads with little to no reimbursement incentives. Employee theft has increased, a contributor to downsizing and cutting costs due to lost revenue. Longevity and loyalty are quickly fading concepts of the past. To guarantee results, management has needed to adopt back up systems. Divisions of quality control and customer complaint departments are needed to fix what wasnt done right in the first place. Numerous policies and guidelines are imported, including those of fair practices and ethics. Micromanagement is implemented to double-check work product and enforce behavioral operating rules that should be a natural mode of operation for us all. Taking personal responsibility has decreased. We have backed into corners like boxers duking it out till we settle on who is to blame for the system not running more smoothly. Does the burden rest on companies to produce more inspired, trained and challenged employees or to the employees to be more self-directed and generative? Both must share in the responsibility of improving work environments with more harmonious relationships, mutual respect and acceptance of individual and company needs. Like the proscenium arch of a theatres stage, if only one column gets moved forward, the arch will fall. By moving both apart at equal distance the structural support necessary to hold up the archway remains. I hope this article starts the cycle of recognition. That is always the first step, then there is more dialogue and brave first starters. Look at Ben & Jerrys and The Body Shop who were willing to experiment and close the employee-employer gap. Homocysteine In previous newsletters, I had written about more benefits of Vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid. These B vitamins are essential for reducing your homocysteine levels. Remember that high homocysteine levels and unchecked homocysteine levels in your blood lead to plaque buildup in blood vessels. Plaque build up in your blood vessels is probably the most serious condition that you will have to face as you age. Plaque buildup in the blood vessels is the major cause of cardiovascular disease. Celiac Disease encourages osteoporosis In another article, I have also written about celiac disease. More than 1.5 million people have this disease and many don’t know it. It is a disease where grains (gluten) have destroyed the small intestines’ ability to absorb nutrients. To make your Vitamin B12 absorption worse, you produce less intrinsic factor as you age. Intrinsic factor is created in the stomach, which helps you adsorb more Vitamin B12. Clinical studies have shown that those with severe celiac disease also have severe osteoporosis. By Alan Summers There are so many varieties of Hosta that they can fill just about any need you have in your garden. Hostas range in size from 6 inches to 3 feet tall with foliage that ranges from green to gold to blue-green. There is also a large selection of leaf textures to choose from. Smooth, seersucker, and crinkled are just a few of the many choices. The flowers are very fragrant and include colors ranging between white, lavender, and blue. Although Hostas are virtually maintenance free, if you follow the subsequent guidelines when planting your next Hosta you will amazed with the outcome. Site Selection Before planting your Hosta, it is important to ensure that the site you have chosen has the appropriate characteristics to allow for proper growth. Light to full shade is ideal for most varieties of Hosta. Types of Hosta with gold or green leaves need some sun in order to develop the proper leaf color. However, the blue-leafed varieties grow best in full shade in a part of the garden with a cooler temperature. Hostas also prefer rich organic soil that is moist and well drained. When and How to Plant Planting your Hosta in the spring will provide you with the best results. Begin by preparing your garden bed with a tiller or garden fork to a depth of 12. Before digging the hole, mix in a 4 layer of compost. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball. Then remove the plant for the pot and place it in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the top of the hole. Carefully backfill the hole and gently firm the soil. Finish by watering thoroughly. Care To care for a Hosta simply place a 2 layer of mulch around the base of the stems leaving room for the flower to breath. The idea is simple, if you eat fewer calories then you expend during your daily existence you will lose weight. The problem is that while most people understand this concept it seems the majority of us have a hard time accomplishing it. Probably the major reason is most people do not understand how their metabolism works in relation to the type of calories they eat. Calories are the fuel that makes our bodys run. Without adequate calories our metabolism slows down and our body systems will begin to malfunction. This is not good because as our metabolism slows the body begins to cannibalize its muscle tissue for energy while hoarding what fat stores it has and converting any excess calories it can find back into fatty storage. If youve ever tried a crash diet this is basically what happens. The last thing anyone wants when attempting to lose weight is a slow down of their metabolism which will render any diet and weight loss goals nearly impossible. So how do negative calorie foods fit into all this? And what is a negative calorie food? Contrary to what it sounds like they are not foods that have a negative amount of calories. All foods have calories; some more than others and depending on the food these calories are metabolized in different ways by the bodys digestive system. The theory behind a negative calorie food is quite simple actually. It is believed that some foods use more calories during the digestive process then they actually contain. Now as odd as that may sound there is some truth to the idea behind negative calorie foods. Before we explain why it would take more calories to metabolize some foods and not others let take a quick look at how calories are used. Lets say you eat a piece of cake before bed that contains 350 calories, and most of that is all from sugar. Your body expends 75 calories digesting that piece of cake leaving you with a net gain of 275 calories. Where do those extra calories go? Straight to fat storage. Now lets say you eat a negative calorie food like a grapefruit (some of you are probably familiar with the grapefruit diet fads) that has 35 calories. If it takes the body 90 calories to digest and metabolize that grapefruit your body will have burned an extra 55 calories with no additional work from you. How does this happen? Most negative calorie foods fall into the fruits and vegetables families. Because fruits and vegetables are nutrient dense and contain lots of fiber the digestive system must work extra hard to extract these nutrients for use by the body. The high fiber content also contributes to the negative calorie phenomenon because fiber digestion is one of the most energy intensive processes the body undertakes when it comes to metabolizing food. This brings us back to the point moms used to belabor upon their kids about eating foods that are good for them. Thats what its all about. In this day and age many of the foods we consume are not that good for us. They contain mainly empty calories that the body quickly and easily stores away as fat, expending very little energy in the process. And with our more sedentary lifestyles the vast majority of people simply do not expend more calories then they consume while the food we do eat has very little nutritional value. I Still Don’t Know What I Want to Be When I Grow Up

By Jo Ann Joy I am so thankful for the options I have had, because I truly believe that having these options has made me the happy and energetic person that I am today. I was fortunate enough to be born fairly intelligent, and I was a good student. Many years ago, my high school guidance counselor told me You can be anything you want to be. That was not helpful, because I had no idea what I wanted to be when I graduated from high school. I was good at everything I tried to do, but I was not really drawn to anything with any certainty. My parents could not send me to college, so I went through the first 10 years of my adult life working in office jobs and learning to be a secretary. During that time, however, the one thing that I knew was that I wanted to go to college. I finally reached a point when I was able to go to college with the help of grants, scholarships, and student loans. I was a single parent by that time, and it was not easy. I worked all through college and I loved college. That made it all worthwhile. I majored in economics, because I loved the subject and the classes. At some point before I graduated, I decided I wanted to go to law school. I had very good grades and a good LSAT score, and I was accepted at a good law school. One of the most appealing things about the practice of law is that you can work in many different areas of law and at many different kinds of law offices. I worked for a small firm, a big firm, and the federal government. For 10 years, I was a solo practitioner, and I loved everything I did as a lawyer. While I practiced law, I was also involved in business and real estate investments, and I also loved doing that. After 20 years as an attorney, I wanted to find a way to bring my legal, business, and real estate expertise together into a new career. I went to graduate school and graduated with an MBA. By Alex Fir Fall is for planting trees. Planting hardy trees in the fall allows them to form a good root system before they must compete with the heat and humidity of hot summers. Fall and early winter are the best time to plant a tree. November is perfect month for this job. Planting in the dormant season puts less stress on the newly planted trees. There is typically more than enough natural moisture, which allows the new trees to start forming roots without much intervention from us. However, if there is no rainfall for several weeks, you must water, even if it is chilly. Do not plant your tree under or in the vicinity of power lines. Give the tree plenty of room to form its natural canopy and shape. Do not forget to take into the account the width of a mature tree. Do not plant a shade tree any closer than 15 feet from the foundation of the building. Select tree that love the conditions you have. If you have a moist boggy soil, choose tree that prefer moisture. Similarly do not put something that likes water (for example, River Birch) in a dry site. When planting a new tree, you should dig a hole which is 3 times as wide as the plants root ball, but only as deep as the root ball is. Do not change the existing soil. You can mix organic matter with the existing soil. The depth of the hole should only be as deep as the root ball, or somewhat shallower. You must allow natural settling of the soil. In addition, do not bury your tree too deep. If you do, the roots will not develop because they will lack oxygen. No fertilization should be used at planting your new tree. Once you planted your tree, apply mulch around it to a depth of 2 to 4 inches. There should be some space between the stem of the tree and the mulch. Water is crucial aspect for success. Too little or too much can both cause the death of your tree. The site should be well drained and water deeply to support root formation. If your tree is structurally good, staking is not required. On the other hand, if you have a tall tree with a small root system, or live in a region with strong winds, staking is required. In this case, use 2 or 3 stakes used with a flexible tie material. Do not stake too tightly because there should some natural movement. Remove ties and stakes after the first year of growth. High Carb or Low Carb - All Carbohydrates Are Not Created Equal

If the latter is true congratulations are in order, and you may want to skip this article. You may be aware that carbohydrates, also known as carbs, are the building blocks of all plant life. They include all the fruits, vegetables, grains and starches, plus some milk products. Nearly all of the carbohydrates we consume are converted into glucose with the notable exceptions of fiber and glycerin. Glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar, is the primary source of energy for our body. Energy is good, right? But here’s the rub. Too much of a good thing ends up causing some real serious problems, including Diabetes and heart disease. Some carbs are high in sugar and digest quickly flooding your blood with glucose. Others digest slowly and provide a controlled, steady source of energy. The chief troublemakers are refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and other high-glycemic carbs such as white flour, potatoes, rice and pasta. When the sugar from these foods hits your blood stream your body quickly perceives this danger and reacts by mounting an insulin counter attack. Insulin carries a small amount of the glucose to the cells for immediate energy and some is converted into glycogen and stored in the muscles and liver for later use. When the glycogen storerooms are full the over flow is stuffed into fat storage tanks on your belly, thighs, buttocks and other unwanted places. An increase in body fat is only one of the side effects of these recurring glucose excesses. Over time the insulin receptors on the surface of the cells no longer function properly and this leads to insulin resistance, which is the road to fatigue, malaise, diabetes and of course obesity. I have to confess that I did make the choice to enjoy some treats which are not part of my normal eating routine. After partaking in some divine sticky buns that a close friend made, I stated These are evil! then I laughed and continued to devour my indulgence. After finishing, I thought about that statement and I realized that it just simply wasnt true. Food is not evil! Food is not your enemy, and food is not at fault for the health and weight issues you may be struggling with. Now that I have your attention, let me explain. Our bodies need food for many different reasons, to sustain us and give us energy, provide us with essential nourishment, and also for our enjoyment or pleasure. We live in a society that provides us with an overwhelming choice of foods that cater to any taste and preference. So heres the real issue when it comes to food. FMS, Food Misuse Syndrome. O.k. so I just made that up, but it seems that every problem in our society is eventually summed up to a syndrome which can be cured by the latest miracle pill. In all seriousness though, it is our misuse of food which can lead to problems with weight including obesity as well as a myriad of negative health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and some cancers. Food is so enjoyable that millions of people struggle with the control it has taken over their lives. Misuse of food can come in many shapes and forms including overindulgence, lack of self control whenever a tempting food is present, using food as a crutch or turning to food for comfort during emotional or stressful situations. Allowing the pleasure and comfort aspects of eating take top priority over the nourishment and energy factors has caused a severe obesity epidemic in the United States which is effecting not only the adult population but the children too! Its time to get our priorities straight. Does the thought of making good choices when it comes to what type and what amount of food to eat seem impossible? Are you one of millions of Americans who struggle with FMS, if food controls you rather than the other way around, you may be panicking right now and saying, But what can I do? First of all, let me reassure you by saying, There is hope! You do have the power and the responsibility to take control over your food choices! The first thing you can do is recognize that you do have a food misuse issue. The next thing is to identify why you want to take control over misusing food, you need to know what your ultimate motivation is in order to keep you focused in the face of temptation! Identify the situations or emotions that cause you to misuse food, and to the best of your ability avoid them. You have to be ready to make lifestyle changes which can be maintained for life. Changing your behavior and taking control of FMS will take some time, but dont let that hold you back. The best day to start overcoming Food Misuse Syndrome, and start using food in the way it was intended for our bodies, is today.
