Make Your Body Burn More Calories
Thursday, January 31st, 2008By Jason Krantz Losing weight is a pretty simple equation when you break it down. Burn more calories than you consume and you lose weight. If your body needs 2,000 calories a day and you consume 2,500 then you will gain about a pound of fat per week. Calories provide energy for three basic bodily processes: 1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) This is the number of calories you burn just existing, even if you did absolutely nothing. The more muscle mass you have on your body they higher your BMR. This is because muscle is metabolically active and burns more calories than other body tissue even when youre not moving. This usually accounts for about 60% of the calories you burn. 2. Activity/Movement Movement requires energy. Any movement you make burns calories. Activating bigger muscle groups like the legs burns more calories than smaller muscle groups like the biceps. About 30% of the average adults calories are burned through activity. 3. Digestive Thermogenesis The process of eating, digesting, absorbing and utilizing food requires energy. About 10% of your daily calories are burned processing the food you consume. If losing weight is your goal then there are a few things that you can do to really rev up your calorie burning engines. The secret to losing weight is knowing how to make your metabolism work for you, not against you. The following strategies will help you kick up your metabolism: Build Muscle Mass Contrary to what most people think, weight lifting can be an excellent way to help you lose weight. Recent studies have shown that regular weight training can increase baseline metabolism by up to 20%. Muscle is metabolically active and burns calories even whey you are doing nothing at all. A 150 pound person at 10% body fat will burn more calories than a 150 pound person at 20% body fat because the 10% body fat person has more muscle mass. Weight training even 3 days a week for about 30 minutes is enough to help you build and tone muscles. Not only will you lose weight, but you will also look better with well sculpted muscles. Vary your caloric intake every few days If your body needs 2,000 calories and you give it 1,500 you will create a calorie deficit, but only for a few days. After about 5 days your body will realize that it now has to work with less calories and your metabolism can actually slow down to compensate for the reduced calories you are giving it. This is a survival mechanism built into use all. Avoid this issue by constantly varying your caloric intake. If you require 2,000 calories per day, try consuming 1,500 for 3 days and then consume your normal 2,000 a day while throwing in some exercise. By constantly changing your diet and calorie demands up you keep your body guessing and get results faster. Drink Green Tea Greet tea has a number of different compounds in it that are very good at helping your body to mobilize fat and utilize it for energy. There are a number of studies that support the overall effectiveness of green tea as a weight loss supplement. A green tea extract supplement can give you all the benefits of green tea with the need to consume cups of the beverage, Aerobic Exercise Aerobic exercise combined with structured weight training can be a great 1-2 punch for your metabolism. Multiple studies have shown that higher intensity aerobic exercise can help you burn more calories than normal for several hours after you complete your workout. 3 30 minute sessions of aerobic exercise a week will do wonders for your metabolism and heart. Constantly change up your routine in order to keep things fresh and keep progressing. Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals Diet is 85% of the weight loss equation. Controlling what you put into your body is much easier when you are not craving specific foods that might not be the best for you or your diet plan. You can control your hunger and cravings by eating smaller, more frequent meals. This helps keep your blood sugar levels stable and ensures that you always have energy available when needed. Just make sure that your small meals dont become high fat, high sugar snacks. Pick A Day Of The Week To Eat What You Want Yes, I really believe that it is critical to still enjoy the foods you love, but to do so in moderation. I personally love Mtn Dew and Italian Beef sandwiches and I allow myself this combo once a week, usually on Friday. Eat you favorite foods as a mini reward for your yourself and to keep your sanity, but do so in moderation. Hopefully these simple tips will help you in kicking your metabolism up to the next level. With a little bit of work you will lose weight and slim up quicker than you ever though possible. Good luck!
