Science Fair Experiment Idea - Better Manners, Boys or Girls?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Mort Barish To evaluate whether girls or boys have better manners, you first must be clear on what good manners are. Manners vary from country to country. The manners described below are typically considered good manners in the U.S. If you live in another country, be sure to modify this and use manners appropriate in your country. For an award winning science fair project idea, read on. When you are invited to someones home for dinner, there are certain niceties to observe. Do not sit at the table until your host (or hostess) invites you to do it, or sits down herself? Do not begin to eat until your host does, or invites you to. Napkins do not belong on the table. Put it in your lap. Do not tuck it into your shirt. How many dinner rolls should you take at a time? Thats wrong. Not six. Take one at a time. How about butter? Always take a pat and put it on your plate. Do not take butter from the serving dish and put it on your bread. Do not overfill your soup spoon and slurp. Do not eat with your mouth open. Keep your elbows off the table. Do not talk while chewing. Do not put dirty utensils on the table. Sit reasonably straight. Bring your food up to your mouth. Do not bring your head and mouth down to your food. If you are speaking to someone, dont shout. Do not talk with your mouth full. There are certain foods that you can eat with your fingers, such as cookies, corn on the cob, small canaps, sandwiches, fruit and berries on the stem, and similar foods. Dont grab food. Dont rush. Do not eat whole pieces of bread, or cut bread with a knife. Break off a small piece at a time. If you want someone to pass the salt, its nice to say would you PLEASE pass the salt. If someone asks you to pass something, like the bread for instance, do not give them a piece of bread, but rather pass the bread tray and let them help themselves. When the meal is over, or if you have to leave the table for any reason, ask the host if you may be excused. Or tell the host something nice, even though the meal was not so hot. You could say thank you, that was lovely. Need we tell you not to spit out seeds, belch or make other body noises? Manners, in some cases, is a matter of opinion. In some parts of the U.S. children typically refer to adults as sir or maam. In other parts of the country, this may be seem a little out of place or even rude. You may want to research manners some more to find out what most people consider good manners where you live Have a dinner party with 3 boys and 3 girls. If you wish, you can do this entire experiment with adults. Do not tell them that you will be watching their manners. Once all of the guests arrive, start observing. Anytime you see someone display inappropriate manners as indicated above, chart in it your table. They will probably want to know what you are doing but just tell them that its an experiment or a project for school, and you will explain later. Once dinner is over, tally your results. Who had better manners boys or girls? You may be surprised by your results in this revealing science fair experiment! Mort Barish is co-founder of Terimore Institute, Inc. Why Bank Overdrafts May Be a Bad Deal For You

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Prakash_Menon]Prakash Menon Many banks actively encourage their clients with low balances to overdraw their accounts. That means, if the customer writes a check or uses her debit card and has insufficient funds in the account, the bank clears the check by granting a temporary overdraft (a short-term loan), up to a specific limit. The customer is saved from the problems of bounced checks or interrupted shopping sprees. Sounds like a good deal for the customers, right? That’s what the banks say. They claim overdrafts are an added convenience to customers. The truth is, they’re often a very bad deal for the customers. Here’s why. When a bank grants a regular line of credit, the interest charged may be up to say, 20% or so. However, for overdrafts, banks don’t charge interest — they charge a flat fee on each transaction. This fee does not depend on the value of the transaction. Let’s see how that works. Overdraft plans fees may be as high as $35 per check. We’ll assume a more conservative fee of $20 per check. If you have four checks totaling $200 that have insufficient funds against them and the bank automatically activates the overdraft and clears those checks, you will owe $80 in overdraft charges. Unlike revolving lines of credit which you can repay at your convenience, an overdraft has to be settled in just a few days. Let’s say the bank allows you to run the overdraft for 14 days. A loan of $200 for 14 days incurring charges of $80 translates into an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of 1043%!A “convenience” for customers? Not at these rates. What does this remind you of? It reminds me of payday loans and cash advances. Those are the other forms of lending which charge you such sky-high APRs. In fact, if you choose to repay a cash advance on due date and not roll it over, you’ll likely be charged far less than what the banks charge you for an overdraft. It gets even worse. Banks have software that ensures that your largest value checks and debits get processed first. There may be some logic to that. However, this arrangement also means that when there are insufficient funds in your account, instead of paying one overdraft charge on one large check, you pay several charges on several smaller checks! Plus, most customers don’t even realize that they are overdrawn until the bank notifies them about it. Consumer advocates say that banks are perfectly aware that many people barely make it from payday to payday. These customers typically have very low balances. Rather than offer them a service that would be in their interests, banks extract high fees from them to cover bounced checks. If you are caught short between paychecks, consider arranging funds from other sources rather than turn to overdraft protection. The best solution to the problem is to systematically build up cash balances so that you don’t face such a situation in the first place. Belief in God; Is It Free Will or is It Purely Social Conditioning?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Lance Winslow For those who are faithful, believe in god and cite the holy bible as a factual record and account of history; Is the belief free will or is it purely social conditioning? That is the question many folks wish to debate and it is a philosophical question that should be answered. One atheist in the discussion stated matter of factly: “It is social conditioning. Those who do not surrender their minds to the TV set or the Bible Thumpers can resist if they choose. Others think what the heck? May as well believe just in case? Either way; is it free will for Children to believe in Santa Clause or is it bombardment of the social surroundings that are lying to them about a Fat Man in a Red Suit?” Besides the utter disdain and condemnation and politically incorrect attack on our beloved Santa Clause and his philanthropy, generally most atheist philosophers would concur with his statement. Of course on the other hand a God Fearing man would state; “How can one understand that word of God if he does not have faith in the Heavenly Father?” Again another good point and thus the debate cannot be settled so easily with such diverse and absolute perspectives and belief systems. But one thing should be clearly noted and that is we are all on this Earth together and we ought to get along for the betterment of all. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. Christ’s Way of Salvation

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Sustines Laplana Did you know that Christ has His own way of Saving men on the day of God’s wrath? Born Again Christian believe that by just believing Christ and accepting Him as a personal savior is enough for us to be saved. Other sects and churches also said that Salvation will be based on man’s good works. And there are other religious group believe that sacrifices or penitence will lead them to salvation. But what did Christ say for men to be saved? According to Christ, those who will enter by Him will be saved.9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. (John 10:9, NKJV)Where can we find those who enter Christ? According to Apostle Paul, those who enter Christ became parts of the body.5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. (Romans 12:5, ibid.)What is this body in Christ? This body is the body of Christ, the Church. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. (I Corinthians 1:18, ibid.)However, we should not think that any churches can be a body of Christ. The church which is the true body of Christ is the church founded or built by Christ Himself. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 1:18, ibid.)It is the church which Christ called it, His Church. It is not the Roman Catholic Church, nor any protestant churches, nor any Christian Fellowships, nor any religious group which claiming by their own as of Christ, but it is the Church of Christ and its members are called Churches of Christ and that Christ claimed it His own.16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you. (Romans 16:16, ibid.) 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 1:18, ibid.)In other words, for us to be saved on Judgment day, we should enter by Christ or become members of the Church of Christ. But why is it that we should enter into the body of Christ for us to be saved on judgment day? It is because, Christ is the savior of His body.23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. (Ephesians 5:23, ibid.)We should not forget this: Christ will save only the Church of Christ, because He is the savior of it. But outside the Church of Christ, it will be the judgment of God.13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore put away from yourselves the evil person. (I Corinthians 5:13, ibid.)So, if you want to be saved on the day of God’s wrath, you better find the true Church of Christ and become members of it. Making a Star Out of Your Child

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Socrates Olympio In an age where the playstation, internet and the ipod seem to reign, it is increasingly difficult to stimulate kids to achieve great feats especially in the traditional domains such as the visual arts, maths and sciences. The upsurge in interest in the new age hobbies and addictions represent a departure from the good ‘old days’ when kids played long and hard and were healthy as could be; obesity was a rarity and invention and creativity were not frowned upon nor shunned by kids. Today, the picture is all too different. The computer has taken a virtual monopoly on the interests and attention of the 21st Century kid. This should not necessarily be a bad thing if moderated effectively. We wont go into the ills and perils of cyberspace, but will rather look at proactive ways of harnessing talent on the net. A few things that one could suggest to today’s information overloaded child are as follows: Traditional activities: Poetry, Drama, Sports, Athletics, Scrapbooking, History Lessons and quizzes. Contemporary stuff: Stimulating hobbies such as Scale modeling Simulation of architectural designs etc. Learn a new language e.g. Chinese (for obvious reasons) For technically-minded: * Building Nitro-powered racing cars Rewards scheme: It is essential to ‘reward’ every little achievement your kid makes in some form that both you and your kid agree on. Although the kid need not know that he or she is being actively consulted about this.Rewards must by nature be minimal in quantity or in material value but high on the sentimental scale. Why? because being human, we treasure loving hugs, approving looks, pats on the back, trips made together to places of interest PLUS the accompanying material reward such money, presents etc. This is fact and is indisputable. The key aspects to making your child do exceptional stuff its allowing them to ‘play.’ It is through their play that their true interests, skills or talents will emerge. However, without your active involvement in the process there’s only a limited chance of succes as every parent or guardian is the first role model and mentor to every child. Just like you project manage at work, you also need to project manage your child’s development. If you physically cant be there for whatever reason, you need to delegate to a trusted person. But there mustn’t be a situation where there’s no active mentoring. And when success comes and the awards start to troop in, you can be proud of a good job being done. Natural Home Remedies for Toothache

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Dr John Anne The common diseases from which teeth suffer are: toothache, caries of the teeth, inflammation of the gums and pyorrhea. All of them are produced from common causes like improper brushing, not chewing your food properly, dyspepsia, too much of intake of refined sugar and general neglect. Of these pyorrhea is the most common and also the most serious. The regimen indicated for pyorrhea, will relieve other disorders too. Pyorrhea: Pyorrhea or periodontal disease is characterized by the promotion of pockets of purulent material round the teeth and loosening of the affected teeth. It is legacy of the modern civilization with too much of emphasis on refined and canned foods, sugar, refined wheat flour and polished rice. In other words, it is the result of too little roughage in the diet and inadequate care of the teeth. Food tends to stagnate between the teeth leading to the excessive formation of tartar. There is a foul taste and also a foul odour in the mouth. A characteristic feature in the later stages is the tendency for the gums to bleed easily. Our food must include alkalis, which are to be found in wheat flour not passed through a sieve, unpolished rice, unboiled milk, fresh fruit and raw, green vegetables. Lack of calcium leads to decay of teeth and give rise to the various diseases. Refined sugar, which does not contain any calcium needs it to be property digested and takes the calcium from the bones to get assimilated into the system. The worst effect is, therefore, on the teeth. An adult needs ten grains of calcium in his daily diet, which is available in flour, unpolished rice, dates, cabbage, tomatoes, gourds, carrots, cucumber and spinach. It is also found in milk, oranges and sesame. Exercises: Like other parts of the body, teeth also need exercise. Hard foods like rusks, raw vegetables and hard-crusted fruits should be chewed in adequate quantities. Wheat soaked in water or maize roasted in sand could be taken in medium quantities to exercise the teeth. Germinated wheat would be still better because it contains vitamin E, the specific for sterility among women, inadequate lactation among feeding mothers and miscarriages and slowly healing wounds. Foods containing vitamin C like lime and oranges, tomatoes, cabbage, onions, those suffering from swollen or bleeding gums should particularly take garlic, pineapple, grapes and guava. Rubbing of the gums with the finger tips also helps. Steam Treatment: Steam treatment should be taken in case of swollen or bleeding gums if nothing else helps. Keep a vessel filled with water on heat and cover it with a lid with a small opening. When the steam starts escaping, expose your gums to its action. Intersperse the steam with rinsing your mouth with cold water. Apply fresh lime juice mixed with coconut or mustard oil after steaming it at night and the glow will be far better than the one given by the any much-advertisement cream or face lotion. Brushing the Teeth: The best way to brush the teeth is with a twig of the neem or acacia tree. Brush your teeth in the morning and the last thing before you go to sleep. Remember that most of the mischief is done by the food particles which infest the crevices between the teeth which give rise to putrefaction. Do not use any toothpicks or other sharp sticks to pick your teeth: if you must do it, do with a silk thread. Munch a piece of radish, carrot, cucumber, apple or guava after meals. That would clean your teeth. Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Dean Shainin This article explains a few things about low carb diets and low carb eating, and if you’re interested in losing weight, then this is worth reading, because you can learn several effective ideas for long term weight loss. As many of the diet plans have been surfacing nowadays, many people still prefer low carb dieting for believing that this way for dieting does not deprive you for all the foods that you wish to eat. Generally, there are actually two main big reasons for low carb dieting. The first one is to lose weight, and the other is to develop the overall health, or maybe both. So many people today, especially those who are overweight and deformed, greatly cater to low carb dieting, and it is interesting that even those who are healthy and who are not overweight really maintain their health and vitality through low carb dieting. The low carb dieting is simply acquiring the best reputation from many people since the low carb dieting is said to be the real way that strikes at the real cause of high cholesterol, obesity, hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes. So for those who are overweight and those who have diabetes, it is necessary for you to know that the low calorie and low fat dieting that is often recommended by most dieticians simply do not function as such. In addition, such kind of dieting just even worsens the dieters health condition. With low carb dieting, it is good to know that when you start a low carb dieting plan, you should replace the carbohydrates with fats and proteins. While every type of diet plan differs in their recommendations, low carb dieting is somewhat one and the same with a high fat and moderate protein dieting. As such, those who are engage in low carb dieting should then get a percentage of at least 60 to 70 percent of their daily calorie consumption from fat. The carbohydrates in this sense should then make up for less than 10 percent, and in some instances, less than 5 percent of the daily calorie consumption. Today, many researches have noted that there are an increasing number of people who attain their goal for losing weight and improving their overall health and this is primarily caused by the low carb dieting. In low carb dieting, you can eat whatever and whenever you wish to eat, in fact you can eat until you are full. So in instances like this, the proper way of reducing food intake may aid the dieters to motivate or sustain the consistent weight loss that they wish. Still, when talking about low carb eating, it is the carbohydrates that must be kept low, not the calories. To further support the view, it is a given fact that in low carb eating lifestyle, you are definitely been eating fats and oils. As such, you rarely ever be hungry for in general, those foods that are high in fat are ever satisfying. A high fat eating coupled with a low carb eating supplements will tell your body that it is not starving just like the case of fasting, but rather your metabolism in this stage maintains a normal level. So while consuming fat is one of the prerequisites for a healthy low carb diet, it is then necessary to limit the consumption of trans-fats like margarine. Instead of that, it is recommended that you use real butter, for it is a good fat. And for your interest, good fats are found in olive oil, flax seed oil, canola oil, and oils that are greatly found in nuts. So then, is low carb eating healthy? Well, with a low carb eating and dieting, you can definitely lose weight constantly and it can reduce your insulin levels, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and even stabilize your blood sugar, which is of course great for diabetics. And since in low carb eating, you will be taking less fruits and vegetables, it is then necessary that you take a good full-spectrum multi vitamins and fiber supplements. It is also important to consider that the main purpose of the low carb eating diet is to bring your body chemistry and insulin level back into balance. Can Depression Kill

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Dr Bob Wilkerson O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry; For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength: Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah. Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee. Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee. LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off. They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness. (King David, Ps 88:1-18 KJV) Depression can take the light out of persons eye and rob a person of the pleasure involved in relationship but can it actually kill a person. King David, the great King of all Israel suffered from deep depression and his words certainly depict a man trapped in depression. Depression is real and it does kill. Is there a viable solution? First, let me give you just a few facts on depression. It is a fact Clinical depression affects 15% of the population, and a third of all women. One of the reasons twice as many women as men suffer depression and anxiety, according to researchers at University College, London, is that womens traditional roles (taking care of the household, family finances and children) are under-valued. Men are also under pressure in an effort to balance family life with an increasingly competitive workplace, and are particularly vulnerable to depressive episodes after redundancy and retirement. The burden on the, often isolated, nuclear family is enormous, with little time left for the kids or relationships with friends and even extended family. It is no secret, depression is the second biggest killer behind heart disease (itself a contributory factor in depression), and is increasing a staggering 23% per year in children, according to one Harvard University study. The real catastrophe is the lack of effective available treatments, with many people led to believe that pills, or herbs or diet will do the trick. The truth is that antidepressants work for less than 50% of depressed people, and are about as effective as sugar pills. The FDA only recommends taking them for short periods. (This does not mean you should stop taking them abruptly, certainly not without medical supervision.) Even natural remedies, such as St. Johns Wort, while they may not have nasty side effects, dont offer a long-term cure. Psychiatrics suggest therapy along with medication, but the primary form of psychotherapy for depression, cognitive behavioral therapy, has a relapse rate of up to 80%, according to University of Washington researchers. What is the solution to depression? Is there a solution? Does an individual have to suffer this deadly disorder for the rest of their life? I firmly do not believe the complete answer to depression exists neither in a bottle of pills nor in cognitive therapy. I believe these treatments help and I am not saying stop taking pills with out your doctors advice. God forbid that I usurp the authority of a medical doctor. In addition, I believe rational thinking helps if a person has the capacity to practice the principles of the therapy. Yet, these approaches are only slightly affective. How can we rid ourselves of these horrible feelings of worthlessness created by depressive episodes? How can we get out of the proverbial, Dark Hole? I wish there was an easy answer to the above questions. It would be nice if taking a doze of Prozac, Zoloft, or other anti-depressants would work all the time every time but the sad truth is they dont. There is no easy answer, nor simply solution to depression. Many of the bible characters suffered from deep and lasting depression. David, Solomon, Jonah, and many others prayed to God to deliver them out of the darkness of depression and God did but God did it in His time not theirs. Romans 15: 13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. I have suffered from deep, major depression and today I am free from depression. I do have my bad days but nothing like those dark days of deep feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and pain. I believe medicine can help but it is a temporary fix and I believe truth therapy (not rational therapy) is essential but I think the biggest factor that helped me was faith. During the days of deep depression, suicide attempts, and self-mutilation, I developed a faith in God. In fact, I came to trust in Him during the hardest days of my life. Looking back, I realize it was during the dark days, when I could not care for myself, He was actually carrying me through it all. Remember the poem, foot prints in the sand. He was there all the time. If I had never had the problem with depression I would have never learned how I needed a relationship with my Creator. After many years of depression, I finally came out of the dark. However, it was in the pain that I discover my real need for a power, God, who could raise me out of the deep deadly pit of depression. I dont care to return to the dark hole so I do my best to turn my life over to His power and control on a daily basis. This has worked for a few years now and as long as this plan works and I will work the plan. What is Mass Communication?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Maria Boomhower Many people are confused and miss their mark when it comes to mass communication. They believe that they are sending their message out to everyone. This is a recipe for disaster and a loss of valuable marketing dollars. Even with mass communication, you must select your target audience. Mass means many people, but it doesn’t mean everyone. If you think of the saying “if you try to please everyone, you’ll end up pleasing no one”, this applies quite well here. Every one has their own tastes, desires, goals and needs. For example you wouldn’t try to sell a 2-seater sports car to a family of four or five looking for a 6-seater with plenty of storage or baggage room. Or try to sell and jungle hiking adventure to seniors with a walker. No matter what your product or service is and whether you are trying to sell to many or just a few, it is important to know what your target market is. I know that some people cringe at this, yet the most successful people always due their homework first and understand who would buy what they are selling. Now you may state that the above examples are obvious and yes, but I was trying to make a clear point of why you should know whom to sell. However not all products and services are that clear. Their have been many examples of people who have thought they knew who they where selling to and didn’t make a dime. Then when they received help and redirected to another market, they became very successful. Yes, it takes time and effort. The more important question is, “just how successful do you want to be?” Most people would agree that they didn’t start up a business just to fail, yet without getting your foundation set, that is what many people each month are doing, failing. So, figure out your target market and then, find out how they gain or get the information that they need.Is it through direct marketing, television, newspapers, trade journals, magazines? Once again, it doesn’t do you any good even if you know your target market, if they never receive the information. Some professionals never read flyers and direct mail, but always read their trade journal. The 3rd piece of the puzzle is that most people need to see your ad at least 3 times before it registers or that they are willing to buy. You can’t just advertise once and go well that didn’t work. You need to commit to seeing it through. So planning your budget for the duration is also important. Mass communication can be very rewarding and give you brand and name recognition and increase your credibility. It just takes commitment, research and time to do it right. P.S.
