By Gen Mason Cellulite is the term that is used to refer to the dimpled or cottage cheese like appearance of skin, usually owing to excess fatty deposits under it. Skin holds its shape with the help of fibers called elastin and collagen that run in different directions. When fat deposits become too much for the adipose tissue to accommodate, some of it may protrude out, through the elastin-collagen network causing the bumps to show. Cellulite has been seen to affect women in particular, as compared to men. Studies show that in women, the tendency to accumulate fat is twice as much in the lower parts of the body as compared to the upper portion; to make matters worse, it is twice as difficult to get rid of fat from the lower half of the body as compared to the upper half. This usually only adds to the woes of those who have a problem with cellulite. Another reason why cellulite targets women in particular is its unhealthy liaison with the female hormone estrogen; this hormone helps an enzyme called collagenase break collagen fibers after weakening them. The fact that the estrogen hormone is most the culprit in all probability is further proven by the fact that even slender women are sometimes found to be affected with cellulite. Men on the other hand seldom develop cellulite because the network of fat cells in their skin usually occurs much deeper within the skin as compared to women. The complete cure for cellulite is yet to be discovered. However, certain methods have been found to help improve the appearance of skin by reducing the unpleasant visual impact caused by cellulite. Simple methods such as brushing your skin every morning is helpful. This simple technique helps stimulate blood and lymph flow to the skin and encourages new cell growth by removing dead skin cells. Skin brushing is also cheap since a body brush is available for as low as $10! Another simple practice like finishing your daily shower with a rinse of cool water to constrict blood flow and tone your skin is very popular. Yoga can work for weight loss if you use it right and Ill tell you what to do in due course. But how exactly can yoga work for weight loss Foras? (Thats my name by the way), yall just stretching thats it! Boy, I cant tell you how many times Ive heard that comment. Well for interested parties, yoga as an option for weight loss is wise, safe and effective.Remember, it is the oldest physical culture known to man and not only does this exercise work the body, it works the mind and soul as well. Hey, have you seen Madonna, Sting or Russell Simmons lately? (I can just see you go: Forasthey were never overweight so dont go there! Wellthey never gained weight either and they actually all still look good for there ages right? Okay, here are the poses I recommend you use when using Yoga for weight loss.Now my friend, I will go over what I believe is the CORE of Yoga Poses. Trust me, there have been times when I did this alone and still got the benefits that yoga gives from daily practice. Lets take notes: The Sun Salutations When using Yoga for Weight Loss: These exercises are a combination of Yoga Poses, Breathing Exercises, Sun Bathing and Prayer. They have been practiced for centuries by Yoga Practitioners in India, Martial Artists and African Wrestlers and as a system to rejuvenate the body and soul are beyond compare. Its been said in the Drugless Healing circles that one round of the Sun Salutations is much better than a week of exercises at the gym! They are very simple to learn and just about anyone, regardless of their fitness or flexibility levels can learn these simple exercises. In actuality, if you are familiar with burpies (the calisthenics exercise), they do derive their origin from the Sun Salutations. Here are some of their benefits: -They alleviate disorders of the skin and waist. -Flexibility increases and breathing is corrected, moreover, they mildly exercise the legs and arms, thus increasing the circulation. -They are the best way to burn calories and reduce weight and are often recommended for obesity and depression. -They are an effective way of loosening up, stretching and massaging all joints and internal organs of the body. -They stimulate and balance all the systems of the body including the endocrine, circulatory, reproductive and digestive system. Technique: 1. Stand straight with the palms together as in a prayer position. 2. Inhale and stretch the arms above the head. 3. Exhale and bend forward while touching the toes. 4. Inhale and stretch the right leg away from the body in a big backward step and keep the hands and left foot firmly on the ground. Bending the head backward the left knee should be between the hands. 5. Inhale and hold the breath. Move the left leg from the body and, keeping both feet together and the knees of the floor, rest on the hands (arms straight) and keep the body in a straight line from head to foot. 6. Exhale and lower the body to the floor. In this position, only 8 portions of the body come in contact with the floor: the two feet, two knees, two hands, chest and forehead. 7. Inhale and bend back as much as possible bending the spine to the maximum. 8. Exhale and lift the body of the floor. Keep the feet and heels on the floor. 9. Inhale and bring the right foot along the level of the hands; left foot and knee should touch the ground. Look up, bending the spine slightly (same position as #4) 10. Exhale and bring the left leg forward. Keep the knees straight and bring the head down to the knees as in the third position. 11. Raise the arms overhead and bend backward inhaling. As in Position 2. 12. Exhale and drop the arms and relax. You have now completed one round. Perform as many rounds as possible in multiples of 3. Ideally you want to aim for 6 rounds minimum and up to a maximum of 30. It only takes about 5-10 minutes, depending on your speed and intensity and is best practiced with as little clothing as possible before an open air window first thing in the morning. Okay, weve gone over the core pose or combination thereof when using Yoga for weight loss in this part of the series of this article. Ill go over SPECIFIC poses (asanas) that will target the trouble spots and some breathing exercises that would speed up burning up of calories. But my friends, note, when I say use yoga for weight loss; I mean ALL its limbs: the poses, the prescribed diet for practice and mind-set. And whether your pet project is canceled, your performance review is a bust, you get turned down for a promotion, or youre asked to leave the company, setbacks hurt big time. Nevertheless, if you start thinking of yourself as a victim or allow yourself to lapse into prolonged negativity, you wont be hurting anyone except yourself. Worrying until you get sick, abusing drugs or denying that youve reached an impasse wont help either. The best strategy for making a comeback is to recognize the reality of the situation, acknowledge your feelings and find a way to cope productively. Here are some other tips you might find helpful: * Remind yourself that in a month, this will be a memory. When setbacks happen, the tendency is to feel like your bad luck will last forever. By keeping in mind that the situation is temporary, youll be strong enough emotionally to take the necessary steps to overcome your misfortune. * Recognize that a setback does not make you a total failure. Treat your setback as the isolated incident that it is. Regardless of what happened, chances are its not going to significantly affect your life one way or the other. And I dont know any successful people whove learned the right way to do things without trying several wrong ones first. * Care for your self-esteem. Your identity and self-worth are too precious to leave in the hands of the volatile business world. Your job does not define who you are. You existed before it and will exist after. In the meantime, rather than focusing on your own inadequacies, remind yourself that you are doing the best you can under the circumstances. * Reach out to your support systems. During a crisis, it always helps to know you are not alone and that you are justified in feeling the way you do. Instead of withdrawing from the people you care about, make an effort to connect with them and lean on them for support. Your network of friends and family is most critical, but you can also receive comfort and insight from spiritual support systems and prayer as well. * Look for humor in the situation. Having a good laugh can counteract the effects of stress and restore your sense of perspective and your ability to think clearly. Its been proven that when one is happy, the body recovers more quickly from the biological arousal of upsetting emotions. Use whatever humor floats your boat corny, silly, dry or satirical as long as it makes you crack a smile. * Be good to your body. As weve talked about, regular exercise and relaxation techniques like stretching, meditating or doing yoga are great ways to reduce negativity and get back on track. Eating reasonable portions of healthy foods can also increase your overall well being while you are recovering from the setback. * Commit yourself to a new project. It is not my intention to pose as a marriage counselor nor therapist, as I am neither. However, via my previous experience as a crisis counselor, and as a partner in an intercultural marriage with its own unique characteristics, I have built up a store of helpful tips, some of which I share with you below. To those who choose to marry with love, knowledge and commitment is the dedication line in a very important book in my life. This is one of the pre-marital workbooks I used to assess to what extent my husband and I were compatible for marriage. Difference in expectations is a common cause of marital discord, and the most unfortunate part is that these expectations are often not discussed prior to making wedding vows. Admittedly, the pedantic, almost arduous activity of talking through pages and pages of questions in preparation for marriage can be a bit daunting.
